Professional indoor soccer comes to Monument Jan. 9
Regional rivalry rages on in US Open Quarterfinals
Special to The Tribune
The Denver Dynamite has met the Colorado Lightning only twice on the field, but already a rivalry rages between the state's two Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL-Pro) teams.
More than bragging rights will be on the line however, when the Dynamite and the Lightning play Jan. 9 at 8 p.m. in a US Open quarterfinals match at the Colorado Sports Center in Monument at 16240 Old Denver Hwy. The winner will move on to the semifinals in the Arena Soccer League's season-long tournament, in which both PASL-Pro and semi-pro (PASL-Premier) teams compete for a national championship title.
The Dynamite are bringing Friday's competition to the Colorado Sports Center because more than half on the team's roster are Colorado Springs residents with deep community ties, said player/owner Pete Randall, who is himself a native of Colorado Springs and Pine Creek alumnus.
This game gives Southern Colorado fans the opportunity to cheer on as local legends like Justin Dzuba (Liberty HS grad), Kelly Robinson and James McMoniqule (Mitchell HS) face the Lightning's own hometown heroes, like Mike Archuleta (Palmer HS) and John Wells (former Corinthians, Pride and Rush club coach).
Both previous meetings between the Dynamite and Lightning teams have been fast and frenzied, with each team walking away with an overtime win.
Tickets, which start at $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 5-11 (kids under 5 get free admission), are available at www.DenverDynamiteSoccer.com.
The Dynamite will return to the Colorado Sports Center on Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m. when they face the 1790 Cincinnati.
