Challenges await Kent Bagley and the other newly elected Regional Transportation District board members as they prepare to be sworn in Jan. 6.

Skyrocketing costs and declining revenues mean added financial pressure for RTD and for FasTracks, the district’s voter-approved 12-year plan for major mass transit in the metro area.

Bagley becomes the District H representative Jan. 6 on the Regional Transportation District board of directors as part of the meeting that will be at the RTD administrative building at 1600 Blake St.

Despite the challenges, Bagley said he is eager to bring knowledge of land use and urban planning to the board and is enthusiastic to represent the people of District H, which includes includes all or parts of the communities of Englewood, Littleton, Cherry Hills Village, Greenwood Village, Highlands Ranch, Centennial and Columbine Valley.

RTD did its part to help prepare the new board members. Cal Marsala, RTD director, met with the new board members, providing an in-depth briefing on how the district is run. That was followed by two orientations sessions with new and existing board members to discuss board procedure, potential issues on the horizon and what legislative action is expected this session that would impact RTD.

Bagley resigned his position as chairman of the Littleton Planning Commission Dec. 22 to prepare to become an RTD board member.

During the campaign, he said he learned bus service is a major issue in his district and he wants to understand the system to learn if service on a route is reduced or a route is eliminated, how can it be restored.

“A lot of area residents are unhappy the Sky Ride from the Mineral Light Rail Station was eliminated and I want to see if anything can be done about that,” the Littleton man said.

He acknowledged FasTracks will be a major board issue.

Bagley said the board must look at how much the total project will cost, how to pay for it and how quickly it can be completed.

“I don’t think we should rush to judgement,” he said. “I hope we’ll take the time needed to make a fully informed decision on the course of action [that is] best for the entire metro area. With that in mind, I feel the next three months are a critical time for the board and for FasTracks.”

Bagley was elected to replace former District H representative Daryl Kinton, who opted not to seek a second term because of health problems.

Three area residents, Bagley, Joe Stengel and Arthur Miller, became candidates for the RTD post.

The final election tally reported Bagley was elected when he received 13,727 votes. Stengel was second with 12,070 and Miller third, with 8,143.
