Concert benefits orphans, AIDS education

Proceeds from the Jan. 25 orchestra and choral concert featuring pianist Jerry Nelson, in addition to proceeds from sale of the DVD created from the recording of that night’s performance, will be used for programs benefiting orphans and AIDS education in Mexico and Africa.
Doors open at 5 p.m. and the 90-minute concert will begin at 6 p.m. at Denver First Church of the Nazarene, 3800 E. Hampden Ave. Artist circle reserved seats tickets include a copy of the DVD expected to be available a few weeks after the concert. It also includes admission to the 4 p.m. rehearsal the day of the concert.

Nelson, who planned and organized the event, said there will be 35-40 instruments in the orchestra and a choral group of 10-12.
The program will include classical numbers and jazz-style renditions of hymns and spirituals. There even will be a little bit of country music that night, Nelson said.
Several cameras will record the sights and sounds of the concert. The recordings will be edited to produce what Nelson called a fast-moving DVD, which will include the music from the concerts mixed with segments showing the Rocky Mountains.
Nelson, the church music director, said he it was last year when he initially began planning to offer Sunday night piano concerts. However, things didn’t come together and the date was pushed back several times.
“The delay gave me time to rethink the plan, and I decided we should do something more significant, a program that would raise money to continue work with children and families in Mexico and Africa,” the pianist said.
