Athlete chosen for state, national award

An Elizabeth senior was nominated as an Old Spice Red Zone Player of the Year. Luke Dillavou is among a select group of players who are eligible to be selected for this honor. Chris Cline, Elizabeth football head coach and athletic director, chose Dillavou based on his leadership, work ethic skills as well as leading Elizabeth in tackles for the past three years.
“I’m very proud. He is a great kid and you love to see the good kids win awards like this,” Cline said.
For the past eight years, Old Spice has recognized high school football players who go above and beyond the call of duty. These athletes embody leadership, performance and desire and serve as examples to their teammates on and off the field.
A winner is chosen at the state level and the national level. So far no Elizabeth athletes have taken either honor. But after his nomination, Dillavou will receive a certificate to acknowledge his accomplishment. The state winners will be announced the beginning of March and the national winner will be announced at the end of April.
After hearing the news, Dillavou was surprised and honored. He said he had been working hard ever since the end of the 2007 season to get to this point.
“I started lifting right after the last season and lifted all the way to the beginning of this past football season,” he said. “It was a lot of hard work but it was worth it.”
Dillavou is also eligible to be named one of the 50 national players of the year. The top 50 players nationwide will be named Red Zone Players of the Year and will receive a plaque and other awards.
