Friends and Elbert County residents are coming together to help a fellow county member in a time of great need. In an effort to raise money for Michael Fisher, who is in need of a lung transplant, the Elbert County Coalition for Outreach community resource center and friends of Fisher are hosting a spaghetti dinner from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 10 at Kiowa Creek Community Church, 213 Cheyenne St. in Kiowa. The dinner will include salad, dessert, bread and beverage as well as a silent auction and live music by the Jaded Travelers.
Fisher started having lung complications in 2005. Since then, his health has been declining and his lung operating ability has diminished to 18 percent of normal. He does qualify for a double lung transplant and is waiting for his opportunity for the operation. Even though Fisher is 100 percent eligible for physical disability through Social Security, he can not apply for the benefit until he stops working. It will take about five months to receive the benefit, and Fisher and his family can not bridge the five-moth gap.
In October Pam Witucki, ECCO director, began working with a few of Fisher’s friends planning the spaghetti dinner. They hope to bring in at least $20,000, and with the long list of donated silent auction items, the goal is not far from achievement. Some of the items include: four Colorado Avalanche tickets worth $536 total plus a $50 parking pass, 52 issues of “Life Magazine” from 1942, four lottery tickets, four tickets to the National Western Stock Show and many more.
Witucki said she was more than happy to get involved in the effort to raise money for Fisher. She has known him since last January and is fully aware of his life-threatening health problem.
“It has been overwhelming by all the awesome response we have had for the dinner,” she said. “It’s been incredible and every dollar we raise is one step closer to getting him his transplant.”
All donations from the dinner and funds from the silent auction will go directly to Fisher and his family. More information on Fisher can also be found at http://friendsofmikefund.blogspot.com/, where donations can also be made online.
