The Parker Civil Air Patrol Cadet Squadron conducted the Wreaths Across America ceremony Dec. 13 at Fort Logan National Cemetery. Seven ceremonial wreaths were placed to remember those who served, honor their sacrifices, and teach our younger generations about the price of our freedoms. Specially made wreaths for Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines and POW/MIA were placed on memorials during a ceremony that was coordinated simultaneously at more than 350 participating locations all across the country and around the world.

About 50 Boy Scouts from Troop 16, along with many of the troop adult leaders, spent Nov. 15 assisting the Parker Task Force in collecting, unloading and sorting the thousands of donations given in Parker for the “9 Cares Colorado Shares” food drive. Parker’s Troop 16 conducted this community service as part of the Boy Scouts of America “Good Turn Week” in which Scouts across the nation are collectively reaching out to others by volunteering. Troop organizers were amazed at the generosity of Parker area residents who, even in these challenging economic times, gave so much to help others hit harder by this downturn in our economy. The varsity poms/dance team from Ponderosa High School took first place in the jazz division for the Continental League Nov. 11 at Chaparral High School. The team is coached by Angela Ottmann.

J. R. Thompson, a resident of Parker, authored “Quetzalcoatl God of Time,” centered on a disastrous time travel experiment. A retired Air Force officer, Thompson uses his experience and technological knowledge to make the story believable. A copy of his book is available at the Parker Library, or the novel may be purchased at Amazon.com. E-mail Thompson at qtimetraveler@q.com.

The Douglas-Elbert Task Force has organized Santa’s Sharing, a program in which individuals, groups and businesses in the community sponsor client families or seniors living alone for Christmas.

Interested parties may participate by sponsoring a task force family. Sponsors shop for new gifts from the family wish list, then wrap and deliver the gifts to the family before Christmas. A Christmas sponsorship generally costs about $50-$60 per family member.

Those who want to help but don’t have time for shopping can purchase one gift certificate for the amount they would have spent on gifts. This allows the parents to purchase and wrap the gifts for their family.

Community members also can help by buying new toys, games or books for the Task Force Toy Chest.

Each year, there are families not matched with sponsors. Volunteers select and wrap gifts for the children from the Toy Chest, and parents are provided with gift cards.

The task force also needs financial contributions and gift cards. These contributions are used to provide for those with special or emergency needs, teens of families not sponsored or families especially in need of food.

To get involved in helping a local family, call the Holiday Sponsorship Hotline at 303-382-3869 and leave a message with your contact information. A Santa’s Sharing volunteer will return the call. E-mail questions to Nani1674@aol.com with the subject line: Santa.

The Elbert County livestock judging team combined for the most points among the top 4-H teams from 32 states to win the title at the 85th North American International Livestock Exposition.

The team includes Curtis Doubet, Parker; Garrett Liss, Elbert; Dan Sewald, Kiowa; and Wyatt Taylor, Kiowa; and it is coached by Garrett Miller and Dean Link from Kiowa.

With the title, the team is eligible to attend the 167th Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh, Scotland, in June 2009.

“The members on this team have worked very hard since they were all 10 or 11 years old to earn this title,” Miller said. “It is quite an honor to work with and represent Elbert County and Colorado with these young men who exemplify the 4-H motto: To make the best better.”

In addition to earning the national champion title, the team placed fourth in sheep, second in swine, 10th in beef and eighth in reasons. Individually, Curtis Doubet placed third in sheep and sixth overall. Wyatt Taylor placed second in swine and Garrett Liss placed 18th overall.
