Old CDs, used light bulbs, chip bags, plastic bottles and soda cans were just a few of the items 24 schools used to create ornaments for the first annual Trash to Trees competition at The Inverness Hotel. The competition challenged students from fourth to eighth grades to use recycled or re-purposed items only to decorate a tree. Collectively, the event raised $5,860 through sponsors and individual tree bids. Ten schools earned $400 plus a field trip to one of four learning venues, including the Wildlife Experience, Museum of Nature & Science, Denver Zoo or Museum of Contemporary Art.

There were 10 judging categories and the community was invited to stop by and cast their vote for their favorite tree. Nearly 400 votes were submitted from Dec. 4-15 and following are the Douglas County category winners:

Best Tree Top Decoration went to Northridge Elementary, in Highlands Ranch.

Brightest Colorful Tree Display went to Acres Green Elementary.

Most Recycled/Re-purposed Items Used went to Pioneer Elementary, in Parker.

Most Innovative Use of Re-purposed Items Only went to Centennial ECE-8.

In addition to the top 10 category winners, voters bid to purchase their favorite tree. All 24 trees were sold with individual bids ranging from $50 to $100 per tree, with 100 percent of the tree bids going back to the participating schools. Trash to Trees also donated $600 towards the purchase of new saplings for Mayor John Hickenlooper’s “Tree by Tree” program, which hopes to plant 1 million trees in the community by 2025. The tree saplings will be planted in the greater Denver community in spring 2009.
