Bobcat, ‘The Kitty’ rescued, healing
By Michele Sample
It’s not everyday we get the honor of seeing a bobcat in our backyard or in the wild, but on Sept. 23, this bobcat became famous.
“The Kitty” or “The Cat” named by Donna Ralph, President and Founder of Ellicott Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, was the infamous bobcat rescued off of C-470. Ralph, who has been responsible for the caring and nurturing of the bobcat at her Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Larkspur for the last few months.
“She was pretty small when she came to us,” Ralph said.
Now, The Kitty has doubled in weight and after a series of X-rays from Deer Creek Animal Hospital in Littleton, her legs have healed properly.
After the bobcat was hit by a car on the highway, her two legs were broken and surgical pins were placed by veterinarians at the Deer Creek facility.
The Kitty was then transported to Ralph’s Rehabilitation Center and was carefully and quietly monitored to ensure she came out of the anesthesia and surgery with comfort. According to Ralph, on the second day after arrival, The Kitty was eating properly, a diet of rodents that also contained her medicine.
“She is currently spending an unspecified time in an outdoor enclosure to rebuild the muscles necessary to hunt and survive in the wild,” Ralph said.
Unfortunately The Kitty has to live without her sibling, who at the time of the accident did not survive.
Ralph expressed sincere thanks to Lakewood Animal Control, The Division of Wildlife and Deer Creek Animal Hospital for the prompt and caring effort that began this special bobcat to recovery.
Donations are being accepted to feed The Kitty until her release, and can be made by check to EWRC, with bobcat on the memo line. Ralph also said that towels and blankets are also needed to replenish the linen supply. Donations are tax-deductible.
The Kitty has been moved from the Ellicott facility to complete her final phase of rehabilitation to an undisclosed location out of respect for the bobcat and the laws regarding wildlife rehabilitation in Colorado. Donations can be sent to EWRC, P.O. Box 75069, Colorado Springs, CO 80970, www.elllicottwildlife.com.
