Winter prep sports season kicks off this week

Crowning football champions in all classifications wraps up the fall prep sports season, signaling it’s time for winter sports to begin.
Englewood High School athletes play four winter sports: boys basketball, girls basketball, girls swimming and wrestling.
This week signals the start of the season for all four teams. Ticket prices are the same for all four sports — $5 for adults and $3 for students with school identification. A single ticket is good for all basketball games played on that date.
The boys basketball team opens its campaign Dec. 2 on the road at Ponderosa then plays its first home game Dec. 5.
Home games are played in the Englewood High School Field House. The Pirates play a triple-header on each home date with freshmen playing at 4 p.m., junior varsity at about 5:30 and the varsity tipoff is scheduled at 7 p.m.
The girls basketball team also opens its season Dec. 2 with a road game at Rock Canyon. The first home game is Dec. 8 against Fort Lupton.
Home-date court action begins at 5:30 p.m. with the junior varsity game and the varsity game follows with a tipoff scheduled at 7.
The swimming team opens the season Dec. 4 on the road at Summit. The first home date is Dec. 9 as Englewood hosts the Jefferson County 4A League relays.
The Pirates swim most of the meets at the home pool, which is located in the northeast corner of the high school building. The entrance to the pool is off the parking lot adjacent to the tennis courts. Weekday meets usually begin at 4 p.m. while Saturday events begin at 9 a.m.
Englewood’s wrestlers open their season at home Dec. 4 against Conifer. The mats are set up in the field house and the match begins at 7 p.m.
Action continues for the wrestlers Dec. 6 as some of the wrestlers travel to Arapahoe High School to take part in the Warrior Invitational while the coaches will take some of the younger wrestlers to a junior varsity tournament.
