Whirlwind building of homes
By Michele Sample
A Lone Tree resident, Honna Gauthier is home from her travels to the Dallas area, where she, along with 250 volunteers, built nine homes in five days just in time for the holidays.
The third annual Whirlpool Corp. Building Blocks event was held Nov. 17-22 with participation from Habitat for Humanity International and the Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity.
“The holidays are a reminder to give thanks for what matters most in our lives,” Ellen Taaffe, vice president of Mass Brands for Whirlpool Corporation said. “It is through the hard work and dedication of partners like Honna that we are able to work toward achieving that mission, one block at a time.”
This year’s Whirlpool Corporation Building Blocks program took place in the West Dallas community of Greenleaf Village II. On average the median household income in this area is $25,790 and an estimated one out of three families live below the federal poverty level. Dallas is the third city to be chosen for the program, which kicked off in Nashville, Tenn., in 2006 and then went to Phoenix in 2007.
Gauthier was chosen as a Whirlpool employee volunteer to help with the building blitz.
