Painless steps to pain- free life

A Castle Rock doctor with a cutting edge therapy hopes the masses discover pain is more than just a state of mind. It often is a manageable affliction treatable with much more than painkillers and cortisone shots.

The KLaser at the Horizon Pain Center can make history out of pain, shots and an endless barrage of prescription drugs used to treat many pain injuries, said Dr. Loren Lawless, a chiropractor who brought the new laser therapy to Castle Rock.

He has used it to successfully treat most everything from tendonitis and back pain to tension headaches and sports injuries. And with the laser therapy, patients are treating the pain where it matters, Lawless said.

“We don’t treat symptoms, we treat the actual cause of the problem,” Lawless said. “The laser penetrates into cells to increase healing time. This laser therapy releases endorphins into the body, releasing feel-good hormones and blocks pain.”

The difference between the KLaser and other laser therapy is in the power, Lawless said. While a standard laser works on about 10 watts per treatment, the KLaser reaches up to 15 watts, making a huge difference in penetration, he said.

The resulting therapy can translate into greater results in fewer treatments, he said. The Horizon Pain Center is one of the few in the nation to offer this particular laser treatment, Lawless said.

He has used the therapy to perform nonsurgical decompression, treat herniated discs, arthritis and fibromyalgia.

For one patient, the therapy is a welcome change to what has become a lifetime of pain management. Castle Pines resident Dennis Murray is a 28-year member of the Professional Golf Association of America who works as the director of golf instruction at the Ridge in Castle Pines North.

His relationship with pain began when he was in his 20s, when he suffered a compressed pubic bone. The condition was misdiagnosed for 10 years and he spent the next 30 years working and playing through his pain.

He became all too familiar with the various chiropractors and osteopaths who treated him over the years with often painful variations of neuromuscular therapy.

The worst of it was when he was limited to a round of golf every week or so. With the KLaser pain therapy, he is happy to say he played nearly every day through this fall.

“My conditions in my joints and hips, back and elbows have all improved,” Murray said. “I’ve noticed tremendous improvement in the way I feel. This seems to be more lasting.”

Murray’s history with pain treatment often required weekly maintenance to keep up with the pain. The laser therapy offered at the Horizon Pain Center not only reduces the number of visits, but is less painful than the bruising “torture chamber” of ongoing neuromuscular therapy sessions, Murray said.

“It’s totally pain free. It’s like a feel-good place when you go over there,” Murray said. “The treatment feels good and when you’re done, it also feels good.”

Laser therapy is considered by most insurance companies to be an experimental treatment and is usually not covered by insurance, Lawless said. Treatments range from $50-$150, depending on the condition and the length of treatment. The Horizon Pain Center offers packages and payment plans for a chance to say goodbye to pain permanently.

The cost usually can be minimized with early treatment, Lawless said.

“Some conditions can be treated once and go away after one treatment. It usually depends on how long the injury has been there and what kind of treatment has been given,” he said. “I’ve had chronic problems where patients have had the condition a year and a half and had a couple of steroid shots for it. Those cases take a little bit longer. I’ve had multiple cases where if you can get to it early it goes away after one treatment and sometimes after a couple of weeks.”

" I marshaled at the Senior Open last summer in Colorado Springs. I was having hip and leg pain, which I’ve had off-and-on since a surgery last year. Dr. Lawless was there treating some of the golf pros and he offered to give me a treatment with the KLaser. The treatment, itself, felt very good and my pain level was immediately better. I wish there was a doctor that used the KLaser where I live so I could continue these treatments. "
