Stopped train serves greater purpose

Residents of The Meadows subdivision awoke to an unwelcome sight in mid-June when a train was stopped on a set of tracks on the edge of the Castle Rock neighborhood.

The train remained on the tracks for several days, much to neighbors' dismay, who say the stopped train is in the way of their view.

"Isn't the railroad concerned about a train left here for a week with UPS [containers] on it?" said Meadows resident Diane Hauser. "It's just an eyesore."

The eyesore has a purpose, however, for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway. The train stopped between the Castle Rock subdivision and an open meadow is among several stopped across the United States to make room for rail traffic diverted by the Midwest flooding, said Steven Forsberg, media relations for the BNSF Railway.

"We are having to detour a lot of trains with loads on them and we're not able to get as many through. We'll be parking some empty equipment that would otherwise be in the way of the loaded trains we're trying to move onto longer routes farther north or south of the flooded areas," Forsberg said. "That happens to be a place they're going to temporarily park that long set of cars."

The National Weather Service reported June 29 that major flooding continues in Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. Flooding is expected to continue through the week, as rivers slowly recede, according to online weather service reports. The flooding was caused by excessive rainfall the first two weeks in June in areas already at their maximum absorption level, the weather service reports.

The multicar train stopped near The Meadows extends as far as the eye can see on the tracks behind Castle View High School. It is an intermodal train with empty containers and locomotives removed, Forsberg.

The train is among several detoured to clear nationwide tracks as the railway makes way for rail traffic to flow around the flooded areas in Iowa and Missouri, Forsberg said.

The train will remain in place for about three weeks as a result of the flooding, he said.
