Kids hyped up on cotton candy had their parents in tow for the opening celebrations at the new lightrail stations along the southeast line on Saturday.

Each time a train pulled up to the platform, young voices squealed in delight and wonder.

"There are a lot of people, good food and weather and lines aren't that bad," Littleton resident Janelle Stremel said.

She and her husband Eric brought their son for his first ride on a train, which they say he enjoyed.

Dry Creek's tailgate-themed party featured Denver Broncos cheerleaders, ballroom dancers, a dollar wind tunnel and most notably, a soup competition.

Nearly 15 local restaurants offered free samples of soup in a friendly competition for best soup in conjunction with the Centennial Chamber of Commerce.

"It's just terrific, the fact that there is such a huge response," Stremel said.

Greenwood Village resident Margie Winstead raved that the new lightrail is convenient, clean and quiet.

Lincoln Station's fall-theme fest boasted pony rides, an old-fashioned popcorn truck and a clown.

"The lines are long," Craig Elmer, of Highlands Ranch, said. "Trying to find a place to park was a big one. But it really wasn't that bad once you made your way up the structure."

Although Elmer doesn't regularly use the lightrail he said it "gets everyone off the road so I can do my job."

He planned on taking advantage of the food offerings and pony rides with his family.

RTD reported Saturday's ridership at 75,000; for Sunday night's Broncos game 11,400 people used the lightrail.

On Friday, Denver Major Hickenlooper and United States Senator Wayne Allard spoke at the ribbon cutting ceremony at Lincoln Station.

VIPs arrived in style zooming in on the lightrail and cutting the ribbon on the platform at that event.
