Tony's Meats and Specialty Foods, a Littleton landmark for nearly 30 years, has expanded into Castle Rock, purchasing the Castle Creek Market in The Village at Castle Pines. The sale was finalized on Monday.

"It was an emotional day telling everybody about (the sale)," said Jim King, the originator of the gourmet fresh meat, deli and produce market in the shopping center at the intersection of U.S. 85 and Happy Canyon Road.

King had envisioned drawing enough customers from the affluent village of Castle Pines, but the traffic just wasn't there.

"The business was growing every month," he said. "The clientele was very appreciative. They liked the consistently high quality. We were kind of hoping we had more of them."

The Castle Creek Market was King's first foray into specialty foods after a successful career in restaurants in Vail.

"I'm a restaurant guy, not a food market guy at heart," King conceded.

With its metro-wide reputation for high quality, Tony's seems a good fit for the Castle Creek Market, which becomes Tony's fourth location in the south metro area. Tony's also operates two shops in Littleton and one in Centennial.

A store in Castle Rock makes sense for Tony's because the company already has a customer base here, said Mick Rosacci, head chef and son of owner Tony Rosacci.

"We're confident in our current customer base, people who are driving from points south," he said. "We have a lot of customers from that south area now."

Tony's in Castle Rock opens today, although it will take about three to four months for the location to be renovated into a full Tony's, Rosacci said.

"We feel we're the right kind of market for the people that live there," he said, adding the family atmosphere of the Castle Rock area is appealing. "If I move, that's where I'll move. We really like the area, we get a real family feel."

Although Tony's carries a wide variety of specialty foods, "meats and seafood are the backbone," Rosacci said. "The No. 1 reason people are coming in is because they want a good piece of meat. ... Our seafood is as good as you get anywhere, unless you're living off a pier."
