Interstate 25 will be closed this Monday and Tuesday nights for the final stages of bridge construction on the new Castle Pines Parkway Interchange.
The $6.8 million project is widening the bridge over I-25 to accommodate two lanes each for eastbound and westbound traffic, Colorado Department of Transportation spokesman Bob Wilson said. The new bridge will include new on and off ramps for northbound I-25, and the on ramp for southbound traffic will be widened.
What will be the eastbound half of the new bridge was erected in July 2004 and is currently supporting traffic in both directions, Wilson said. The closures Monday and Tuesday nights allow construction crews to place four girders that will complete the westbound portion of the bridge.
On Monday and Tuesday, north- and southbound I-25 will begin closing in phases at 8:30 p.m., Wilson said. All lanes will close by 10:30 p.m., at which point drives will detour around construction via the exit and entrance ramps. All lanes of the interstate will re-open to traffic at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.
No traffic will be allowed over the bridge either night, complicating the detour, Wilson said.
For instance, to access Castle Pines Parkway from northbound I-25 commuters will have pass the interchange, exit at Surrey Ridge, turn around and access the parkway from the southbound I-25. Commuters trying to access northbound I-25 from Castle Pines Parkway will have to take I-25 south to Happy Canyon, exit and turn around to get on northbound I-25.
The work represents what will likely be the last full closings of the interstate for this project, Wilson said.
