Roadside memorial serves as a remembrance and reminder

She cries because of the hurt and she cries because it helps.

She cries because of the hurt and she cries because it helps.

Karen Freeman lost her 16-year-old son CJ Mosman in a traffic accident last March. Since that tragic day, she has had trouble coming to grips with the void in her life. But Freeman has also been inspired by the numerous stories told by people who knew her son.

The stories of random acts of kindness and thoughtful gestures have given her a perspective on her son she may have never known. The thoughts and feelings from strangers have given a whole new dimension to CJ.

"We've dealt with the grief and it was rough as expected, but we have been very blessed with different ways to remember CJ," Freeman said.

Now there is a way for everyone in Parker to remember her son and others who have been lost in traffic accidents over the past year. Since Mosman's accident, there have been seven fatalities from vehicle crashes in and around Parker. So when Freeman's sister, Judy Wolf, came to the town's traffic engineer with an idea to commemorate those who have died, she jumped at the chance.

David Aden said he heard the idea for a roadside memorial sign program and thought it would be a great way to raise awareness. The campaign is similar to one used by the Colorado Department of Transportation.

"I thought it was a good idea. It will make people think twice about their speed and the driving conditions," Aden said. "With any luck, we won't have to put any more of these up."

The signs say, "Please Drive Safely, In Memory Of ..." One has already been erected at the site of Mosman's accident on Crowfoot Valley Road south of Stroh Road. His family members already created a makeshift memorial out of flowers and a wooden cross. A memorial pavilion is also being built in the teen's honor at Metzler Park in Castle Rock where he lived.

Freeman said the sign program is something her son might have pursued if he lost a family member or friend.

"This sounds like something he would do. He was very generous and thoughtful. I know he would be proud of me," Freeman said through tears.

Freeman is part of a support group for mothers who have lost a child in a car crash. For more information, call Aden at 303-840-9546.
