The plan to connect Cherry Creek State Park to Castlewood Canyon State Park via trails will be one step closer when the Douglas County Parks and Trails Department opens a new stretch of the Cherry Creek Trail.

Douglas County Parks and Trails Director Ron Benson discussed the final touches on a mile-and-a-half-long section of trail between Castle Oaks Road and Walker Road in Douglas County at the Cherry Creek Trail Providers meeting July 21.

Benson said the path will open in a few weeks once "directional signage" is posted. The piece of trail will go underneath Colorado 86 and continue south for a mile before it reaches the Centennial Materials property line.

The connection is part of a plan to create 24 miles of continuous trail between the two state parks, but many gaps still need to be completed.

The Parker Recreation Department has been talking to the E-470 Public Highway Authority about extending the E-470 trail farther east. The E-470 Trail, which stretches nearly to Golden, is already connected to the Cherry Creek Trail, but Parker wants to find a way for trail users to bypass South Parker Road safely.

The public highway authority brought up the idea of building the trail along Cottonwood Drive, but Parker town staff had concerns about crossing South Parker Road. Another E-470 proposal included building a bridge over South Parker Road, but no engineering studies or cost estimates have been conducted, said Dennis Trapp, projects administrator for the recreation department.

"How and when this is completed is up to E-470 and the surrounding jurisdictions. We have asked them to explore different options [for extending the trail]," Trapp said.

The Stonegate Village Metropolitan District will fill in a trail gap by building tunnels underneath Jordan Road and Lincoln Avenue.

The Newlin Gulch Trail ends on the west side of Jordan Road while another piece of trail stops at Challenger Park across the street.

Starting next month, crews will begin building a tunnel under Jordan Road. The trail will go behind the Conoco gas station at Lincoln Avenue and Jordan Road.

The project's second phase includes constructing another tunnel underneath Lincoln Avenue to reach Challenger Park just west of the Parker Recreation Center. Trapp said the project is supposed to take between 18 and 24 months.
