The Cherry Creek Regional Trail will go a little farther later this year.

Douglas County plans to extend the trail from Castle Oaks Drive near Colorado 83 in Franktown where it now ends, 7,500 feet to the south this fall as part of a two-phased project to connect the two last sections of the trail in the county. Two more gaps exist north of Parker.

Construction bids will be awarded this fall for the 8-foot wide concrete trail and work is expected to start in October.

The county wants to install a bridge over Cherry Creek next year to connect the trail with an existing trail section north and south of Colorado 83, which isn't connected to the trail - and build a trailhead at the Pikes Peak Grange near Franktown. The county has budgeted $400,000 to complete this 1.9 mile section.

Negotiations are continuing with the owner of property between the highway and Castlewood Canyon State Park where the county plans to complete the last section of the trail in 2005.

Ron Benson, director of trails and parks for Douglas County, said this section of the trail has been moved out of the Preble's Meadow jumping mouse habitat.

The county would also like to purchase or lease land near Walker Lake in the Franktown area and develop a passive park and trailhead that would connect to the regional trail.

The trail is complete from Castle Oaks Drive north to the 17-Mile House property, which is in Arapahoe County. Arapahoe County officials are still negotiating with the owner to complete what's called the "missing link" that would extend the trail northward. A gap also exists in Aurora that would connect the trail with Cherry Creek State Park.

When the 24-mile trail is finished it will connect Cherry Creek State Park with Castlewood Canyon State Park.
