Transportation plan sees doubling of traffic, population

Visualize twice the traffic and population in Douglas County and that's what county engineers and planners are getting ready to combat with a new transportation plan.

The Douglas County 2020 Transportation Plan focuses on bringing mass transit lines such as light rail and possibly commuter train service into the county to ease road congestion.

The county will present the plan to the Douglas County Planning commission in early June.

The plan estimates the population of Douglas County will grow from 140,000 to 360,000 during the next 17 years. And there will be 145,000 jobs in the county, a growth of 91,000 beyond the existing number.

And traffic in many places will more than double, the plan states.

The plan also suggests the need for new roads and upgrades to existing ones.

The county envisions a light rail line running along Interstate 25 and a commuter rail line along U.S. 85 from the Denver metro area into Douglas County through Sedalia and Castle Rock, the plan states.

Now, it is not technologically feasible to run light rail over Surrey Ridge, so such a transit line following I-25 is not yet possible, said Ron Coontz of the county's engineering department.

The natural hump in the landscape is too steep for existing electric train technology to conquer.

The plan also suggests extending Stroh Road west from Colorado 83 to I-25 and extending it east to connect with Tomahawk Road.

Other new or upgraded roads in the plan include:

q A frontage road on the east side of I-25 from Lincoln Avenue to Stroh Road,

q A paved and widened Daniels Park Road from U.S. 85 into Highlands Ranch,

q Chambers Road coming from Aurora into Douglas County to connect with Bayou Gulch Road, and

q A new road connecting U.S. 85 and Roxborough Park Road.
