The Lone Tree City Council agreed to contribute $15,000 toward the redesign of six southern light rail station canopies.

The stations will be along the Southeast Corridor line once the Transportation Expansion project is complete.

Greenwood Village took the lead on the $60,000 redesign project. Because Greenwood Village did not like the original canopy design, the city hired architects to create a more traditional look for the six stations south of Interstate 225.

The original design, still planned for the stations north of I-225, has a more urban, contemporary feel. The new design, an inverted V-shape roof, is similar to the look of the stations along the southwest corridor line.

While Arapahoe County and Greenwood Village will pay for the redesign of the Orchard Road and Arapahoe Road stations, Lone Tree will fund the redesign of the County Line station, which will be in Lone Tree's boundaries.

Denver might contribute toward the Belleview station. Each station canopy redesign costs $10,000, but Lone Tree will contribute up to $15,000 in case Douglas County and other entities do not agree to help pay.

"Greenwood Village wanted a simple design that will not make the stations stand out. We want the stations to blend in with the surroundings," Lone Tree City Council member Jane Staebell said. "The original design was fine, but it was very futuristic. It did not fit in with the Park Meadows mall and with other Lone Tree structures."

The proposed County Line station will be across from the mall.

Different jurisdictions will also be able to add embellishments such as city logos, to each station, Staebell said.

The T-REX contractor, Southeast Corridor Constructors, already designed the stations, so the redesign will cost the cities and counties.

T-REX officials are willing to lead the canopy redesign as long as the interested entities pay the cost.

"The south end wants its own visual identity," T-REX spokesperson Amy Ford said. "The new design is more reflective of the village look. If you're willing to pay, you can make changes to the baseline design. It's part of the refinements and enhancements process."
