Pupils in Parker's Pioneer Elementary School will get to create an archaeological dig in the schoolyard, thanks to a grant from the Douglas County Educational Foundation.

The young archaeologists' work will be part of a unit on the study of nonliving things, with an emphasis on rocks and fossils.

The project is just one of many that will receive money. More than $46,000 was handed out Jan. 22 in 31 grants at the Educational foundation's semiannual grant awards ceremony.

Among the other grant recipients was D.C. Oakes High School in Castle Rock, which received a grant for its project, "Developing Healthy Strategies in Adolescent Women."

Students will attend presentations by the Rape Assistance and Awareness Program through the women's studies class and receive information on how make healthy lifestyle choices.

During the ceremony, the foundation also acknowledged individuals who have worked to promote creative education in Douglas County.

Among the recipients were Peg Grippe, who was presented with the volunteer of the year award for her "outstanding efforts on behalf of students and the foundation."

"When you're doing it for kids, there's no better reward," Grippe said after accepting her award.

The Shining Star Award went to the investment firm Dain Rauscher for its ongoing commitment to Douglas County students.

Dain Rauscher has been the title sponsor and a major contributor to the foundation's annual Champions of Education Golf Tournament for many years, said Linda Pelo, executive director of the foundation.

This was the fifth year the Shining Star and the Volunteer of the Year awards were presented. Accepting the award was Rudy Andras, the firm's vice president and economist.

The Commitment to Education award was presented to Ralph Schomp Automotive for its partnership with the foundation on various projects. The company is best known as a co-title sponsor for the annual Greg and Steve concerts.

Ralph Schomp Automotive also continues to be one of the largest sponsors of the annual golf tournament, Pelo said. Lisa Schomp, president and owner of Ralph Schomp Automotive, accepted the award.

The foundation, which began in 1990, presented its first grants in 1991.

"When we started we had a budget of about $60,000," Pelo said.

Last year the foundation presented more than $260,000 in grants, staff scholarships and funding for the school district's literacy program, Read to Succeed.

The money given in grants is gathered from several fund-raising projects throughout the year.

More than 11,000 people attended the Greg and Steve concerts, which raised $43,000 last year, said Dave Harmon, past president of the foundation's board.

The annual golf tournament in July at the Sanctuary Golf Course also was a success. Along with the Champions of Education Dinner, Dance and Auction, the tournament brought in $121,000, he said.
