Outlet mall worries about T-REX's bite
If the Prime Outlets at Castle Rock could climb on Santa's lap and ask for one thing for Christmas, it would ask that road construction not dampen the holiday shopping spirit.

If the Prime Outlets at Castle Rock could climb on Santa's lap and ask for one thing for Christmas, it would ask that road construction not dampen the holiday shopping spirit.
"We aren't worried about access from the Meadows Parkway," said Joyce Rocha, general manager of the outlet mall. "We have been assured by the Colorado Department of Transportation it will be completed by November."
The work being done for the project at Atrium Drive and U.S. 85 includes signals and a turn lane, said a press release from Centric-Jones LLC of Lakewood, the contractor for the Meadows Parkway and U.S. 85 projects.
By Thanksgiving an additional access to the mall by way of Atrium Drive should be complete, said Gary Murphy, spokesman for Centric-Jones.
However, work will continue on the Interstate 25 corridor, and that's what worries Rocha.
"Our main concern this Christmas season is the southbound traffic on I-25 from Denver," Rocha said. "The sooner CDOT gets the southbound lanes finished, the better for us.
"CDOT has been really good about keeping us informed on its progress," Rocha said. "We remain hopeful for the Christmas season."
Representatives at CDOT were unavailable for comment because of the Columbus Day holiday.
Although Rocha had no hard numbers, she said she thought traffic through the outlet mall this summer was less than in previous years.
"Our visibility has been hampered by the construction and detours," Rocha said. "But CDOT said the southbound lanes should be nearing completion by Christmas."
Construction around the mall has been ongoing all summer, Rocha said.
Work on U.S. 85 at Meadows Parkway, including a reconfiguration of lanes, will be completed by Nov. 1, the CDOT press release said.
"After traffic is in its permanent configuration on Meadows Parkway, the U.S. 85 ramps to I-25 will be closed for construction of a new bridge," Murphy said.
In 1999, a Prime Outlets customer survey revealed that the mall's major traffic comes from the Denver and Colorado Springs areas, Rocha said.
"I believe Douglas County residents were included in the Denver metro numbers," Rocha said. "There is a good deal of local traffic, although U.S. 85 has been a minor inconvenience for our local shoppers."
Formerly known as the Castle Rock Factory Shops, the center was built in 1992 and changed to Prime Outlets at Castle Rock in 1998. Owned by Prime Retail in Baltimore, Prime Outlets of Castle Rock is one of 51 centers in 26 states.
The Prime Outlets of Castle Rock houses more than 130 shops in more than 470,000 square feet of retail space.
