Daniels Park Road neighbors against paving

Douglas County said it refuses to fight a battle that a group of Castle Pines residents are preparing to wage.

The residents do not want Daniels Park Road to be paved. If Interstate 25 and U.S. 85 are two points of an arrow that point south to Castle Rock, Daniels Park Road is a wobbling, winding shaft.

The road heads south from the east-west Wildcat Reserve Parkway in southern Highlands Ranch down to U.S. 85, just north of Castle Rock.

"Daniels Park Road is going to be paved. It has always been in the plans," said county spokeswoman Kristin French.

The group of Castle Pines residents want the road to stay a rustic, rural, unpaved road for biking, horseback riding, nature and wildlife. They want a public hearing with the county.

The county already had a public hearing about the road, French said. Mid-April there will be an open house to present the pave design to residents, French said.

Residents opposed to paving Daniels Park Road had a better chance several years ago, when the county identified its long-term transportation goals.

For several years, the road has been on the list of roads that must be paved, French said. Volumes of construction traffic speed daily over the narrow, winding dirt road, coating the area with thick layers of dust.

Daniels Park Road has the potential to become a regional arterial north/south route between Highlands Ranch and the Prime Outlets of Castle Rock.

If paved it could become the route of choice for those who want to avoid I-25 and U.S. 85 construction, said resident Linda Houston. She said she has been trying to organize a meeting with the county.

"There should be no expenditure of public funds for planning the paving of Daniels Park Road until, after public hearings, it has been determined that it is in the public's interest to pave the road," states a petition signed by residents who have been rallying support against paving this summer.

Houston said a north/south frontage road should be built along Interstate 25, instead of paving Daniels Park Road.

The road passes by more than 11,000 acres of permanent open space at Cherokee Ranch, Daniels Park and the Highlands Ranch Open Space Conservation Area. It passes by the historic Pretty Woman Stagecoach stop, Kit Carson's last campsite marker, buffalo herds, Tallbull Memorial Grounds and several upscale neighborhoods.
