New drainage building to help with flood control

When recent snowfall begins to melt, the stormwater runoff from a portion of developed and undeveloped land in Parker will be detained and checked for water quality.

A new drainage building was constructed west of Dransfeldt Road, between Pony Express Drive and Longs Way, to detain and check the water quality of stormwater runoff.

The 20-Mile Drainage Facility is expected to help with flood control and remove pollutants in the stormwater before it enters "environmentally sensitive waters" of the Cherry Creek, said Tom Williams, stormwater utility manager for Parker Public Works.

"The Cherry Creek has some nutrient problems," Williams said.

Some of the major pollutants the town has experienced are from urban development around the Cherry Creek reservoir, Williams said.

Phosphorous is high around the reservoir, Williams said. The new drainage plant was built to remove those pollutants before they travel down the Cherry Creek into the Cherry Creek Reservoir.

The pollutants will be removed to maintain the quality of the environment that surrounds the Cherry Creek and other areas downstream.

The building has two large detention ponds that act as one pond, Williams said. The two ponds will be divided by a future 20-Mile Road alignment.

A variety of drainage structures on the plant help provide water quality and drainage.

An outlet structure discharges into the Cherry Creek, Williams said.

Along the lines of environmental protection, the town removed several trees along the Cherry Creek trail northwest of the intersection of Pony Express Drive and 20-Mile Road for the construction of the drainage center.

Most of the trees that are being removed are in an unhealthy environment, Williams said. A majority of the trees are dead.

The town plans to purchase trees of the same size from a local nursery and spread the trees around the property for a better survival rate, he said.

Because some of the trees were removed for construction of the plant, the trees will be replanted in the springtime.
