Colorado Gov. Bill Owens commemorated Interstate 25 reconstruction in Douglas County with local and state officials at a press conference off Castle Pines Parkway Thursday morning.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is finishing I-25 expansion work between Lincoln Avenue and Castle Pines Parkway and is starting work between Castle Pines Parkway and the Meadows/Founders interchange. One lane will be added in each direction. Reconstruction should be finished in 2002, CDOT officials said.

Voters approved highway bonds in November 1999, which put I-25 improvements about five years ahead of schedule, said CDOT officials.

Owens recognized former county commissioner M. Michael Cooke, who now sits on his transportation committee. Cooke was in Washington, D.C., several years ago trying to get funding for I-25 when dozens of cars were involved in an accident on I-25 near Castle Pines.

When federal officials learned of the wreck, it helped convince them that Colorado needed highway funding. Cooke reminded them that trucks filled with hazardous material travel through the corridor.

Speakers at the commemoration included Castle Rock Mayor Al Parker, County Commissioner Melanie Worley, CDOT Executive Director Tom Norton and Transportation Commissioner Roger Craycraft. Castle Rock, the county and CDOT worked to get the projects approved.

Additional south metro corridor projects are being evaluated by CDOT. The section of I-25 was designed for 40,000 vehicles when it was built in the 1950s. More than 60,000 vehicles travel the corridor daily, CDOT reported.

The cost is $36 million for the 4.5-mile segment between Lincoln Avenue and Castle Pines Parkway. The 4.2-mile segment between Castle Pines Parkway and Founders/Meadows Parkway is $34 million.

"While the primary purpose of the climbing lanes is for safety, the benefits we will receive from smoother traffic flow are immeasurable," Worley said. "In order to provide more local employment opportunities and to diversify our tax base, the county has planned for and pursued well-managed quality development."
