The couple apparently experienced trouble shortly after departing Centennial Airport around 9:40 a.m., said Michael Rollin, a spokesman for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
The pilot and his wife, whose names have been withheld, tried to radio the tower to say that the aircraft was losing power, Rollin said.
The couple apparently attempted to turn the plane, a Piper Cherokee, around and head back to the airport, but managed to crash land into a field, Rollin said.
"They left without a flight plan," Rollin said. "We really don't know if their radio worked. We know they tried to radio the tower, but we don't know where they were headed."
Sheriff's deputy Mark Tracy found the plane by chance two miles south of Centennial Airport, between E-470 and South Peoria Street.
The husband and wife were transported to Swedish Medical Center with head and neck lacerations and broken bones. No other passengers were on board.
"They were in serious condition when we found them, but they were still conscious," Rollin said. "The plane suffered quite a bit of wing damage, but we don't know what caused the plane to go down."
The Monday mishap was the third involving aircraft leaving Centennial Airport over the weekend.
At about 7 a.m. Saturday, a restored World War II T6 single-engine advanced trainer being flown to an air show in Reno, Nev., experienced engine trouble over Golden and had to make a forced landing on Colorado Boulevard in Highlands Ranch. After repairs, the aircraft took off and returned to Centennial later in the day.
No one, including the 41-year-old pilot, John Zayac, was injured in the incident.
At about 10:30 p.m., Saturday, an airplane had to land in a field near Quincy Avenue after it lost power after its takeoff from Centennial, authorities said.
Three persons reportedly suffered minor injuries in the forced landing.
